Tamarindo

Tamarindo in Costa Rica is one of the world’s most sought after destinations.   Tamarido Beach was made famous by the classic Endless Summer movies and has slowly transformed from a sleepy fishing village to a vibrant town with charming shops, restaurants and nightlife.  The draw of Tamarindo is that it has managed to retain its relaxed pura vida vibe and laid back surf culture while offering some of Tamarindo’s best real estate listings, vacation rentals, and dining options.  Moreover, Tamarindo offers easy access from most North American and European cities with flights into the Liberia International Airport (LIR) under 1 hour away.

Tamarindo Beach

Tamarindo Beach is set in a long, wide bay split by a salt water estuary.  The section of beach to the south of the estuary is where Tamarindo is located.  This is where you will find the bustling town center with the majority of Tamarindo real estate and vacation rental options.  The beach offers good surfing near the estuary, and calmer waters perfect for swimming as you walk south.  The beach is wide and sandy, which also makes it wonderful for taking long strolls or riding your bike.

Playa Grande is to the north of the estuary and is home to the Las Baulas national park, world-renowned as a giant leatherback turtle nesting site.  You can hire a small local boat called a “panga” to take you across from Tamarindo, but if you want to visit the nesting sites, you must book an official turtle tour which can be done at the little stand near the estuary.  Like most estuaries in Costa Rica, there are resident crocodiles, so we don’t recommend swimming or wading even at low tide.

Tamarindo Town Center

There are many beachfront, ocean view and near beach properties in the town center, along with a wide variety of restaurants and shops that range from funky to high-end luxury.  Some of our favorite places to stay in Tamarindo include Sunrise, La Perla and the Diria – all with great locations near the beach, an easy walk to all the activities and amenities in town, and all offering pool or ocean views. If you want to stay in Langosta – an upscale neighborhood 10 minutes walk south of Tamarindo – we recommend Naxos with its big pool and fabulous ocean views.
