Hacienda Pinilla, a 4,500 acre luxury residential community with 3 miles of coastline,  is situated just 15 minutes south of Tamarindo and 1 hour from the Liberia airport.  The Hacienda Pinilla golf course is a  7,300-yard, par 72 masterpiece designed by Mike Young.  The course is unique in that it is one of the only golf courses  in the world built to face the ocean, and as a result, its coastal layout features both exhilarating play and breathtaking views.

The Hacienda Pinilla golf course also boasts certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its attention to ecological balance.  The course is sprinkled with majestic indigeneous trees such as Guanacaste, Pichote and Matapalo which create a natural habitat for exotic species of tropical monkeys, birds, reptiles and deer. Tropical trees not only provide shade and scenic beauty, but also act as natural obstacles. Reserva Conchal

The exceptional Garra de Leon course is located 15 minutes North of Tamarindo and 45 minutes from the Liberia Airport.  Golfing in Costa Rica is at its finest on the Garra de Leon course, which has ranked in Conde Nast’s Top 25 International Golf Courses and for good reason. Garra de Leon, the oldest golf course on the North Pacific Coast, is a fantastic 18 hole  Par 71 championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. According to Trent Jones Jr., Garra del Leon represents “environmentally sensitive golf at its best.”  The 6956 yard course sits on stunning Conchal Beach, a white sand bay inside the luxury Reserva Conchal Beach and Golf Resort.

Although the Garra de Leon course offers a challenging eco-golf experience, it was created with the resort player in mind.  The fairways are wide and there are multiple teeing options. Lakes and ravines enhance the course and place a premium on tee shots and accurate approach shots to open, manicured bermuda-grass greens.

The Garra de Leon course was also designed with attention to the preservation of native dry forests and mangroves which makes it particularly attractive.  Four Seasons Papagayo

The 220 acre Four Seasons golf course is situated about an hour north of Tamarindo and 20 minutes from the Liberia airport.  The Four Seasons is Costa Rica’s most luxurious resort and is set on the Papagayo Peninsula.  Designed by famed architect Arnold Palmer, this championship 6788 yard, Par 72 course boasts glorious Hermosa and Papagayo Bay views from fourteen of its eighteen holes.

Golf Digest named the golf course at the Four Seasons one of the  “Best 100 Courses Outside the United States.” Designed with the resort golfer in mind, the course has four sets of tees to appeal to golfers of all abilities. The play is both fair and challenging, with wide, rolling fairways and wide, contoured greens. The Four Seasons course is planted entirely  with Paspalum, an eco-conscious choice that endures the tropical climate well and can be irrigated with salt water.

Golfing Near San Jose

Cariari – San Jose

San Jose is Costa Rica’s capital city and many travelers arrive in the country via the Juan Santamaria international airport. The lovely Cariari course, designed in the 1970’s by George Fazio is situated between the city and the airport.  The Cariari golf course was the first 18 hole championship golf course in Costa Rica and still ranks as one of the best courses in Central America. The 6,590 yard, par 71 course offers challenging tree-lined fairways where accuracy is more important than length.

Valle del Sol – Santa Ana

The Valle del Sol golf course is situated in Santa Ana, a high end suburb in the hills around San Jose. Valle del Sol, designed by Tracy May,  is an 18-hole professional, par 72 course that gently slopes for 6,750 yards. The course offers fair yet challenging play with its small streams and lakes on almost every hole.   Valle del Sol has a tropical garden-like atmosphere with fantastic views of the Irazu, Barva and Poas volcanoes to the north, and San Jose’s majestic mountain range to the west.
